Like many historical magical sites and educational facliities, Wydan University has a number of ghosts in residence. Some of them interact daily with the living residents of Wydan University, while others tend to keep more to themselves.

[edit] Portly Portius (Portius Powell)

Portius Powell

As his name suggests, Portius is portly. In life he was officially the professor of potions studies at Wydan, but over time he became Wydan's unofficial food-taster, as well as adviser to the House Elves who worked in the kitchens.

This wonderful existence came to an abrupt end when Portius suddenly collapsed, and died - much to the horror of the students he was lecturing at the time. After discovering that a corporeal form was a necessary requirement for teaching potions (at least, the practical side of things), he instead devoted himself to spending the rest of his ghostly unlife advising the kitchen House Elves.

Just as he was in life, Portius is a jolly (fat) man, always willing to stop and chat with the living residents. He is most often seen around the kitchens and the dining hall, but is also a common site around the potions section of the academic wings. Because he is the one who interacts with the living the most, Portius has become the ghosts' de facto leader and representative.

[edit] The Short-Sighted Supporter (Icarus Besom)

Icarus Besom

The youngest, physical age-wise, Icarus Besom was a first year student of Wydan, studying in Charms. He would have been in Aesalon, had he not lived before the creation of the college system.

Despite his physical shortcomings that meant he could not take part in the sport, Besom was an avid Quidditch fan in life. In fact, the sport that consumed his life would eventually result in his death. He was not struck by a rogue Bludger or anything like that - in a fit of excitement that the Snitch had been caught by the team he favoured, resulting in his team winning that year's competition he forgot to watch his step, and fell from the supporters' stands and was killed instantly.

During Quidditch season he can be seen haunting the Pitch, although in between games and in the off-season, he is a more common sight in the castle itself. He earns his nickname from the fact that he has difficulty seeing (more so than the average ghost), but does not seem too bothered by this, due to the fact he is never upset at "accidentally" floating into the girls' bathrooms/changing rooms.

[edit] The Forlorn Gentleman (Dorian Fairfield)

Dorian Fairfield

See full article for more information

The most recent addition to Wydan's family of ghosts, Dorian Fairfield met his end in 1832, a few hours after his graduation from Wydan with a CATS in healing.

A romantic at heart, during his time at Wydan he had fallen hard for a Muggleborn witch he had befriended at Hogwarts. It was an odd combination to be sure: Caroline was shy, lowerclass plain and Muggleborn, while Dorian was charming, upper-middleclass and Pureblooded. And engaged, albeit to a girl he did not love.

The fantasies Dorian built up in his mind came to a head shortly before his graduation, when he asked Caroline to elope with him. He had everything all planned out - including what he would do if she turned him down. She did. So Dorian went back to his room and stabbed himself with a dagger he bought solely for that purpose.

Now the most reclusive of Wydan's ghosts, Dorian haunts his room in what is now the Old Dorms. The only time he is seen outside his room is every few decades when a girl wanders in and reminds him of Caroline. These girls - shy, outcast Muggleborns - are then courted by Dorian, who helps build up their confidence and self-esteem by making them feel special, beautiful (attention they have not experienced before). However, eventually each girl abandons their ghostly paramour in favour of someone with an actual body, and Dorian returns to his room, and waits for the next one.

[edit] Nurse Rhea

Nurse Rhea

Unlike with some of the other ghosts of Wydan, Nurse Rhea is one of the few that there is little information about her lifetime, and Rhea does not tell.

We can assume, both from her behaviour and her haunt, that Nurse Rhea was once a Healer in the Wydan Infirmary, but beyond that nothing more is known. Research has been undertaken, but no healer by the name of "Rhea" has been found in the Wydan history books. She is one of the older ghosts, as her first appearance - as a ghost - in the records occurs in the late 1600s.

She is one of the more reticent ghosts, generally speaking only when spoken to, and generally not leaving the Infirmary save in extreme circumstances. Rarely seen during the day, Rhea haunts the Infirmary at night, keeping watch over all the patients there.

She is dressed in mourning robes, and is never seen without her veil, further adding to the mystery surrounding her.
