University Policies: Dress Code

Wydan University has a long-standing tradition of academic dress, going back from its earliest days as a small institution in the 16th century through to the modern day. Although there are several kinds of academic dress, visitors to the university will generally see at least one form during their visit.

In lectures, tutorials and practicals, the general form of academic dress is that of a day robe, worn over the top of plain clothes. The day robe is a full-length black robe, with detailing around the wrist hems and bottom of the robes. The colour of these details, as it is with the cord tie around the waist, is dependent on the wearer’s college of residence, which is in turn dependent on their major of choice. On the left breast pocket of the robe is worn the coat of arms of the wearer’s particular college of residence.

There are exceptions to the rules regarding the wearing of day robes to various academic classes, but these are defendant on the course taken. Students will be informed of any of these exceptions/restrictions by their professors.

For formal events, such as the May Ball and Graduation, specific details will be released prior to the event in question. However, it is generally accepted that the former is a black tie event, while the latter is subfusc.
