University Policies: Lecture Attendance
For our newer students, especially those who have just come from secondary education, it may come as a surprise to learn that students are, for the most part, not required to attend lectures. Wydan University is just that – a university – and unlike at secondary school, it is the student’s responsibility to make sure they attend classes.
The student is the one paying for the education, and if they choose not to make the most of their investment, then that is also their choice. However, if they miss important information given in lectures by making the choice not to attend, the consequences of that fall upon them.
Unless they so desire, professors will not follow up on any absences or missed assignments. You are all adults now, and the responsibility to attend your lectures and meet deadlines falls upon you, and you alone.
However, it should be of note that some professors do take note of attendance, and have an additional section of their pass-fail criteria based on a student’s attendance. This is especially common in practicals and tutorials, where one missed attendance could result in the difference between a pass or a fail in a module. You will be informed of these.
Overall, though, we highly recommend that you attend all lectures, tutorials and practicals, to make the most of what professors (or their assistants) offer, and to best prepare you for the examinations and the end of the semester.
